How to Audit Your Own Website’s SEO in an Afternoon
You don’t need paid software to get a solid first pass at your SEO — Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, and an honest look at your own site handle most of what a small business actually needs to check. Block out an afternoon and work through the list below.
Begin in Google Search Console
Pull up the Coverage report and look for pages Google isn’t indexing — more common on small sites than you’d think. Then check which queries and pages are already pulling traffic; that’s usually a better guide to what to build on than guessing at fresh topics.
Be honest about page speed
Feed your homepage and a couple of key pages into PageSpeed Insights. Anything sitting consistently below 50 on mobile is worth fixing — and for most small businesses, that just means compressing images and trimming plugin bloat, no developer required.
Cover the on-page basics
Make sure every page that matters has its own title tag and meta description — missing or duplicated ones are a common, easy-to-fix problem once you spot them. Check your headings run in a sensible order (H1 then H2) and that the main keyword shows up naturally near the top of each key page.
Try using your own site on your phone
Actually use it — search for a product, fill out a contact form, click through to wherever you’d expect a customer to land. Any friction you hit there is friction your customers are hitting every day.
Cross-check your Google Business Profile
Make sure the listing is claimed, current, and lines up exactly with your website’s contact details — any mismatch chips away at the local trust signals Google relies on.
Where this approach falls short
A DIY pass will surface the obvious stuff, but anything deeper — crawl budget, schema errors, tangled duplicate content — really needs a proper tool-assisted audit. Even so, an afternoon like this clears out real, common issues that most small sites are quietly living with.
If your DIY audit turns up more than you have time for, our SEO team can pick it up from there.
