Google Ads Conversion Tracking: The Setup Most Accounts Get Wrong

When someone clicks an ad and later becomes a lead or a sale, conversion tracking is what tells Google Ads that happened. Skip it, and the platform’s automated bidding has nothing to aim for except clicks themselves — so budget quietly drains toward visitors who never buy anything. In the accounts we audit, it’s rare to find conversion tracking done right: either it’s missing entirely, or it’s wired up to count page views as if they were leads.

What genuinely qualifies as a conversion

Think real signals of intent: someone fills in a form, stays on a call long enough for it to matter (not a two-second accidental dial), taps through to WhatsApp, or checks out a purchase. Simply landing on a “thank you” page doesn’t belong on that list — not if a visitor could end up there by accident.

Where most setups go wrong

The classic error is firing the conversion event off a “thank you” page view, with no check that the page is only reachable by actually completing the form. Leave it open to a direct link or a back-button reload, and conversion numbers balloon with false positives — pulling Google’s bidding engine toward entirely the wrong signal.

Calls need their own rules

If leads come in by phone, call tracking needs a minimum duration before it counts as a conversion — 60 seconds is the usual bar. Set it, and a thirty-second wrong-number hang-up stops polluting the data.

Why this deserves more attention than almost anything else in the account

Target CPA, Maximise Conversions — every automated Google Ads bidding strategy depends on clean conversion data to function. Feed it noise, and it will optimise your spend toward exactly the wrong traffic, confidently, with nothing in the dashboard flagging that anything’s wrong.

Not sure your account’s tracking is solid? Our paid advertising team can check it properly and fix what’s broken.
